SANTA IN THE SUMMER: CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS DOWN UNDER

SAMANTHA GOH SUGAR QUEEN Christianity is the primary religion of Australia. Therefore, Christmas is a festive season celebrated by many here. Over the years, many migrants with other religions have also made Australia their home. Most families with young children love Christmas because it coincides with summer school holidays. It is a time for families to reunite and have a wonderful Christmas celebration with family and friends. Melbourne has already started their Christmas celebrations with decorations in famous hotspots of the city since early November. Situated in the middle of Federation Square is the amazing centerpiece; a 16.5-meter LED Christmas tree that lights up every evening. The historical Melbourne Town Hall, which was opened in 1870, will also light up with different colors every night for the public to view. Other historical buildings that will light up at night with Christmas lights projections are namely the Flinders Street train station and the State Library Victoria. The magic of Christmas will not only dazzle the city at night; daytime activities will also entice everyone to enjoy the festive season. Santa’s workshop will be popular with young children who can meet and greet Santa himself. Families can take selfies with Santa in his workshop when he’s not feeding his reindeer. There will also be performances from the Australian Girls Choir in front of Melbourne Town Hall. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the many activities organized by the city of Melbourne. Commercial businesses will decorate their shops with Christmas ornaments. Shopping centers will have their hours extended to 9pm for customers to purchase gifts for families and friends.
