By Peter Ward Onward In just a few short years, writer, actor, singer, and songwriter Shaina Taub has exploded on the New York theater scene with two adaptations of Shakespeare plays for the Public Theatre Public Works program, including “Twelfth Night” in 2016 and 2018, and “As You Like It” in between in 2017. But last year, her original Broadway musical “Suffs” catapulted her front and center in the theater world as Taub took home the Tony for Best Book and Best Score for the story of the women’s suffragette movement. In March, the GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter returns to New York’s Lincoln Center backed by a full band with several yet announced special guests. During her peripatetic schedule, we caught up with her in December 2024 for her first Exquisite Magazine interview. Peter Ward: Let’s begin with your crazy schedule. You wrote the book. You wrote the music and you’re starring in a Broadway show. When do you sleep? Shaina Taub: I try and keep my mornings a little free, so that has been helpful, just to be able to kind of sleep-in after the shows at night. PW: Has it all sunk in? “Suffs” marks your Broadway debut, and you came out of the gate like a thoroughbred. How does it feel? ST: I’ll never get over it. I feel so grateful and excited. I mean, it was such a long road. Getting the show to Broadway was never a sure thing. So, I’ve never taken any step of it for granted at all. That had been such a goal, for such a long time.
