Highlights from the 67th Miss Universe Pageant in Bangkok, Thailand

This year’s edition of the most coveted beauty pageant, 67thMiss Universe has concluded. As the world now celebrates and adore the newly crowned queen, Miss Universe Philippines Catriona Gray, let us have the round-up of events and interesting facts from this year’s quest for the most confidently beautiful woman in the world.

1This is the third time Thailand hosted the Miss Universe pageant. First time was in 1992 and then in 2005 for the second time. It was also noted that all these 3-time hosting stints happened with 13 years gap. Mr. SomchaiCheewasutthanon, CEO of TPN 2018 Co., Ltd., is this year’s official licensee.

2This is the first time in Miss Universe history that a transgender contestant (from Spain) be allowed to represent and join the pageant. Before the announcement of this year’s TOP 20 semi-finalists, the Miss Universe Organization gave special recognition to Angela Ponce, Miss Universe Spain, with a video clip montage in her honor. In her speech, she said that she doesn’t need to win, she just needed to be there, sending message of equality, inclusion, respect and diversity to the international community. Miss Spain received a standing ovation from the auditorium audience as she took the runway.

3The Top 20 candidates were chosen based on new format picked from 3 regions of the world: 5 from the Africa and Asia Pacific, 5 from the Americas, 5 from Europe and 5 from the “Wild Card” pick from all 3 regions. The People’s Choice Vote system has been removed.

4This is the first time that 7 members of panel of judges are all female, all successful in their respective careers, they are:

n Bui Simon, Miss Universe 1998 from Thailand and founder of Angel Wings Foundation.

n Monique Lhuillier, world renowned Filipina bridal and fashion designer with creations worn by celebrated women, including First Ladies of the United States.

n Janaye Ingram, corporate executive and is founder of Women’s March Inc. n Michelle Mclean, Miss Universe 1992 from Namibia, recognized model and television presenter and Chairperson of the Michelle Mclean Children Trust.

n Iman Oubou, Moroccan-American entrepreneur, former pageant title holder and founder of women’s digital platform SWAAY MEDIA. n Lilli Gil Valleta, an award-winning entrepreneur, co-founder and CEO of CulturIntel and CIEN+.

n RichelleSingson-Michael, CEO of Platinum Skies Aviation and FinTechCasha.me, also a pioneering architect and Vice Chairwoman of the LCS Group of Companies.

5The winner for the National Costume Show is Miss Universe Laos, On-anong Homsombath, her costume, the “Stream of Generosity,” is a half-human,half-bird spiritual creature in traditional Laos’ folklore.

6This is the first time for Vietnam to ever make it to the TOP 5 finals. H’Hien Nie also made her statement wearing pixie-cut hair and crop top and pants suit ensemble at the pageant breaking the stereotyped long hair and long gown looks combination. She also won the hearts of many pageant fans with her humble and inspiring life story for not following their village custom of marrying young to pursue her dreams, She donated all her pageant prizes to the charity she supports, the “Room to Read”project. It was also later shared that she was mentored by a Filipino pageant trainer, AnjoSantos.

7This year is also a strong finish for Asians. Top 10 included 4 from the Asia Pacific (Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal and Thailand), 5 from The Americas (Canada, Costa Rica, Curacao, Puerto Rico and Venezuela) and then 1 from Africa (Miss South Africa).

8Of this year’s 94 contestants, 13 of them chose to wear gown designed and made by world-renowned Filipino fashion designers during the Long Gown Competition at the Preliminary round. 9Her Royal Highness, Princess Sirivannavari of Thailand designed the swimsuits worn by all

94 candidates during the swimsuit competition round. She also designed the gowns worn by Miss Universe 2017 Demi Leigh Nel-Peters and Miss Universe Thailand 2018 Sophida Kanchanarin during the “Thai Night Gala and Fashion Show”.

10And of course, who will ever forget and not noticed the signature “Lava Walk” and “Slow-motion twirl” that Miss Universe Philippines, Catriona Gray did during the swimsuit competition at the Final round? Even super model Tyra Banks was so impressed with this now iconic move performed by the Philippine native winner.
