FRUITS OF PERSEVERANCE AND DILIGENCE – CASTLE COMBE, ENGLAND

By GILDA PINEDA DIONELA KINGDOM ADVENTURE Castle Combe is deemed the prettiest village in England. As you traverse the narrow road, it’s like time froze during medieval times. The first edifice I saw was the exquisite church of St. Andrew, where the faceless Castle Combe Clock – apparently the oldest English medieval clock – is still in use. Next, as we pottered down the hill through the village, we admired each of the fairytale honey-colored cottages that have lined the street since 1600. The cobblestone and architecture of the houses are made of Cotswold stone rather than cement, steel and aggregate stones that modern houses use today. Then we stopped at the river bridge to snap a picture from the village’s classic photography spot, where even former Miss Universe Catriona Gray took a photo. It is here you will find the weavers’ cottages, babbling brook and wraparound woodland, all coming together for that picture-perfect view. Once you’ve explored the beautiful village close-up, venture out to the surrounding hills to view it from afar. The woodland footpath can be found at the top of The Street, which will take you on a pleasurable 5-mile loop of muddy terrain. Only the passing cars and the people who are taking photos with their cameras or phones will remind you that you are living in the 21st century. The village was preserved not only through the efforts of the neighborhood but also by strict government rules for the benefits of the next generations.
