Faith, Love, and Boxing Gloves

By Mark Anthony King KINGSCRIPT From the moment I met Mrs. Sonia Ramos at her California-based gym “Boxing for Christ” – a connection made possible thanks to my friend Crystal Ruiz, the mayor of San Jacinto County – I instantly felt this woman’s powerful love for Christ. It radiated from her eyes, her smile, and the way she carried herself. There was a strength, compassion, humility, and faith about her that can only be felt when God is truly in your heart. As a Christian, this is something that I not only appreciate tremendously, but it’s something that reaffirms my own faith. As someone who’s been boxing 6 days a week for the past 5 years, regularly sparring with professionals and those who’ve won/competed in Golden Gloves, I found myself in one of the few places that feels like home wherever I am. A no nonsense, gritty, non-temperature-controlled boxing gym. We said hello, exchanged pleasantries, and right in the middle of being given the grand tour, things would immediately take an interesting and most unexpected turn. Among the sea of heavy bags, Everlast gloves, sweaty hand wraps, pads, passionate coaches, seasoned professionals, talented prospects, and bible verses plastered all over the walls, she openly confessed elements of her life that most people keep locked away. We live in a world of smoke, mirrors, and cleverly created illusions which are strategically presented during day-to-day interactions. People are not only terrified of being vulnerable, but also of sharing the dark parts of their past. Transparency not only removes the devil’s hold on you, but it also allows you to grow from your past and ensure that your mistakes can be weaponized for someone else’s benefit.
