YOUNG OBSERVERS WITH FRANCINE VUDOTI: ONE CLUB, TWO DIVISIONS, EMPOWERING THE YOUTH

By Sara Kil Bubbly Pop Culture Some argue that newspapers and magazines are on the verge of extinction. You can even say young people do not like to read newspapers, let alone write for one. The young still write. Some young people want to change the world with their writing. Francine Vudoti, a young journalist, is doing just that by bringing the narrative of youth voices to the table through writing. Francine is the youth editor of the Fullerton Observer, a community newspaper in Orange County, California. I commend Francine’s hard work for bringing awareness to many topics that impact the youth and the community. Young Observers Club (YOC), a group of young volunteers who are great observers of the world around them and want to change the world, is what Francine calls her team of volunteer writers. When she was in the seventh grade in 2018, she started YOC. She had written a kid’s column for the Fullerton Observer for four years at the time. She wanted other students to be able to contribute their voices, learn about local journalism, and get involved in their community by volunteering to write for her local newspaper, which has been the go-to source for local news since 1978. The chief editor agreed to her idea, which she called Young Observers, and she was given the go-ahead to establish and run the Fullerton Observer’s youth section. In 2021, she expanded YOC to explore opportunities outside of her community. Through the second division of YOC called Young Observers International (YOI), club members become active global citizens.
