CHAIR CALOZA’S FORUM ON ASIA-CALIFORNIA PARTNERSHIP

By Naiia Lajoie GLASS HALF FIL After crossing the 5th floor bridge of the Ovation Shopping Center in the heart of Hollywood, with the Hollywood sign visible; looming in the distance, guests attending Assemblymember Jessica Caloza’s forum on California-Japan/Philippines trade were welcomed into the famed JAPAN HOUSE. As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Asia/California Trade and Investment, Assemblymember Caloza’s venue selection for the informational event served as the perfect setting. Launched during Japan’s late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration, President of JAPAN HOUSE Yuko Kaifu described the location as a public diplomacy house during her opening remarks; showcasing Japanese culture to visitors and highlighting the current “Looks Delicious!” exhibition, exploring Japan’s food replica culture. Chair Caloza wasted no time in launching into the importance of California trade, given California is currently the 4th largest economy in the world. “California ranks among the world’s economic powerhouses,” she began, “and the partnerships with Asia are essential in sustaining that leadership.” Other guest speakers followed suit, including fellow Assemblymember Mike Fong, Chair of the California Asian American & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. “There’s no shortage of uncertainty in the business environment,” specifically addressing the trouble with tariffs and more recently, issues with processing various visas. Senator Christopher Cabaldon, the first Filipino American to serve in the California State Senate, reminisced about Obamaera trade relationships during his remarks. “There’s no select committee like this in the senate,” he mused, applauding Chair Caloza’s efforts in bringing public servants and business leaders alike together in this forum. Assemblymember Rick Chavez, whose district hosted the event, was also present, as was former Los Angeles Mayor and Ambassador of the United States to India Eric Garcetti via Zoom.
