THE REEL VS. THE REAL: A CANDID MOMENT WITH DMITRY SHOLOKHOV

The call to fashion design has been present in Dmitry Sholokhov’s life since childhood. Being involved in ballroom dancing competitions from age 12, he found himself in the creative flow of designing costumes for himself and his dance partner. At 18-years-old, he moved from his home country of Belarus to the United States as a student of Psychology, which would later prove to be critical in the field of fashion design – and the stardom he never planned for. Arriving in Maryland, Dmitry barely spoke English, but was surrounded by many foreign exchange students and felt right at ease. After graduating, he went back to Belarus with a clear plan to come back to the USA. Continuing his work in Maryland while building his portfolio in Washington, he set his sights on applying to one of the top designer schools globally, Parsons School of Design in New York City. He was eventually accepted. During these humble beginnings, a friend co-signed for a student loan, and through his diligence, he ended up getting scholarships that ultimately covered 100% of his tuition. Eventually, he ended up with the Jones Group as a designer and illustrator. Project Runway – The New Direction and New Experience Dmitry decided to challenge himself further and applied to the show “Project Runway”. After several rounds of cuts, he made it to the final cut. This new journey resulted in him having to part ways with his employer by resigning, all to avoid a conflict of interest. He knew he was taking a risk. Being on TV and in a very competitive show, he found himself in a challenging environment.
