By Mark Anthony King KINGSCRIPT Who are you? This is the most philosophical question that has birthed ideologies, books, courses, seminars, and cultural movements. I think that most people have difficulty in answering this question for several reasons. Consider the famous and popular iceberg analogy wherein the gargantuan icy behemoth we see above water is but ten percent of the reality; ninety percent of which is hidden beneath the surface. This ratio is a perfect representation of the surface-bound human experience. We are terrified of what lies beneath the surface of ourselves, spending a disproportionate amount of time focusing on cultivating, exploring, and showcasing the most minuscule aspect of who we are. It’s no wonder there seems to be eight billion simultaneous existential crises taking place with no end or solution in sight. Albert Einstein famously said that insanity is defined as doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting a different result. Perhaps it’s time that, as a collective, we decide that we are going to handle the human emotional and relational experience a little bit differently so that we stop getting more of the same confusion, uncertainty, lack of direction, ill-defined identity, and crippling sense of purposelessness. If you were to grant yourself one moment of unbridled audacity and unrestricted boldness, I encourage you to give yourself this gift right now and ask yourself, “Who am I beneath the surface?” Who is the “You” that is unknown to others? Who is the “You” that was neglected by you? Lastly and most importantly, who is the “You” that lies beneath the surface, residing in the pitch-black depths, frigid void, and unexplored abyss?
