Nepales On and Off the Red Carpet Los Angeles — While other fashion designers are dressing up sizes 0 to 2 models only, Pia Gladys Perey is designing for the regular woman — anybody from size 10 and up. She also expanded her line for dressing up for women of all ethnicity, color, race and origin and not only for white models. First time I met Pia, I found her to be so humble and down-to-earth. She may not brag to you but no less than Angelina Jolie loves Pia’s clean, easy, silhouettes for her red-carpet appearances. We were able to interview Pia by email and below are excerpts of our conversation with her: You were born in Mendez, Cavite, a town next to Tagaytay. What is it about this place that influenced you into becoming the fashion designer that you are? What sights, sounds, taste, culture, people’s lives blended into your designs? I was born in Mendez then raised in Tagaytay, surrounded by greenery and the most laid back and loving people who truly value the sense of a united community. I grew up going to the farm, laying coffee beans to dry under the sun, and having picnics on the hillside overlooking the Taal Volcano, waking up every day (even on weekends), very early in the morning by either sound of the rooster or my father playing the best selection of music from his era. Everything was so simple and uncomplicated, and I think those are very evident in my designs. I design dresses that are easy to wear, concentrating on highlighting the beauty of the woman wearing the dress. Are you still using any indigenous materials from the area?
