The Filipino Kibitzer by Ruben Nepales

Ruben V. Nepales is an award-winning journalist based in Los Angeles. In 2012, he became the first and only Filipino to be elected as chairman of the board of the prestigious Hollywood Foreign Press Association or HFPA, which votes on and presents the annual Golden Globe Awards.

He is also the first Filipino to be elected as a member of the HFPA where he currently serves as a board member. He also serves on the board of directors of the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra or FASO, the only Filipino symphony orchestra outside of the Philippines. Both HFPA and FASO are non-profit organizations.

Among Ruben’s honors are prizes from the National Entertainment Journalism Awards, a U.S.-wide competition, and the Southern California Journalism Awards, presented by the Los Angeles Press Club.

Ruben’s first book, “My Filipino Connection: The Philippines in Hollywood,” published by Anvil Publishing, Inc., won in the print journalism – book category of the Migration Advocacy and Media Awards presented in December 2012 by the Office of the President of the Philippines’ Commission on Filipinos Overseas.

“My Filipino Connection…” is a collection of mostly published pieces from his widely-read Philippine Daily Inquirer column, “Only IN Hollywood.” The book reflects Ruben’s advocacy to spotlight talents of Filipino heritage who are excelling in the world entertainment stage. He also writes for various magazines, including Smile, Cebu Pacific Air’s inflight magazine.

He was the managing editor of a special commemorative book, “Hollywood Foreign Press Association: A History (75 Years of the Golden Globe Awards).”
